Global Compact

Global CompactThe Pirelli Group sustainability model is based on the UN Global Compact Principles.

In an address to the World Economic Forum on 31 January 1999, the former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, challenged business leaders to join an international initiative – the Global Compact - that would bring companies together with UN agencies, labour and civil society to support universal environmental and social principles.

The Global Compact is a purely voluntary initiative and it seeks, through the power of collective action, to promote a responsible corporate citizenship. The initiative is based on a network, the centre of which is the proactive action of both the Global Compact Office and the UN agencies.

More in detail the Global Compact requires companies to embrace, support and enact, within their sphere of influence, a set of core values in the areas of human rights, labour standards, environment and anti-corruption. These principles are universally shared in that they derive from the"Universal Declaration of Human Rights", the "International Labour Organization's Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work,", the "Rio Declaration on Environment and Development" and the "United Nations Convention Against Corruption.".

In October 2004, by means of a Letter addressed to the United Nation Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the Pirelli Group has formalized its adhesion to the Global Compact, as well as its commitment to respect and support the "Ten Principles".

Traditionally sensitive to environmental and human rights issues, in recent years Pirelli has formalised this commitment with the publication of the "Pirelli Group Values and Ethical Code" (2003), "The Group Policy for Health, Safety, Environment and Social Responsibility" (2004) and "Pirelli Group Equal Opportunities Statement" (2006), thus fully embodying Global Compact principles by implementing a series of actions that are explained in detail in the Group Sustainability Reports.
