Institutions

Group companies maintain relationships with local, national and supranational authorities in a spirit of full and active cooperation and transparency that does not compromise their independence, economic targets or the values enshrined in this Code (Article 5 of the Ethical Code).

The dialogue on which relations with Institutions and Public Administrations are based is conducted believing that business and relational ethics must be pursued along with the Company's success.

Active co-operation and transparent dialogue with Institutions, together with the firm respect of the different existing cultures also allows a full and sustainable integration with the local communities where the Group operates.

Pirelli maintains a stable channel of interaction with both national and supranational bodies, including Governments, diplomatic organizations, Parliaments, the European Commission, and other central and local government agencies and public bodies.

The activities conducted include identifying and monitoring the legislation and procedures defined by specific national and European laws and regulations.

One example of this interaction between Pirelli and the various EU bodies is the company's involvement in the European Alliance for CSR, which was formalized at the start of 2007 and is also an example of how Pirelli is working with the EU in relation to competitiveness in sustainable operations. Thus far, Pirelli's involvement in this initiative has taken the form of participation in European laboratories for the Alliance coordinated in Italy by the Sodalitas Foundation. The Equal Opportunities Workshop, in particular, produced a toolkit encompassing all the best practices for the management of gender diversity, including the Pirelli Group's Equal Opportunity Project. Sodalitas presented his toolkit to the European Commission in Brussels on 29 November 2007 in conjunction with the third Marketplace on CSR, with Pirelli then presenting it to the CSR Europe General Assembly in June 2008, also in Brussels.
Also of particular importance was the signing of the European Road Safety Charter in Brussels on 27 April 2007 by the CEO and Managing Director of Pirelli Tyre and current ETRMA President. The charter is a part of the European Commission's objective to reduce by half the number of roadway fatalities by 2010.

Cooperation and dialog often lead to local development projects in areas in which Pirelli operates. The following are just some of the most recent such projects:

In June 2008, the project to promote Italian culture in Slatina, Romania, was presented.
Promoting cultural exchange between Italy and Romania is the goal of the project, which was presented at the Pirelli facilities in the presence of Daniele Mancini, the Italian Ambassador to Bucarest, who sponsored the event, as well as the mayor of Slatina, Darius Valcova, and the Dean of Modern Languages at the University of Craiova, Gabriel Cosoveanu.

In April 2008, a new teaching post was created at Politecnico di Milano, i.e. "The Chemistry of Rubber and Compound Technology", a collaboration between the university and the Pirelli Group.

The Group has also promoted and financed a partnership between the Niguarda hospital in Milan and the Slatina hospital for the training and development of doctors, nurses and technicians. The project includes a training contribution for personnel at the Slatina hospital, including through professional exchanges and training periods both in Milan and in Slatina. In June 2008, the second delegation of doctors and paramedics from Slatina came to the Niguarda Cà Granda hospital.
