Sustainability Report

Now in its third edition, the Pirelli Group's Sustainability Report is an expression of a corporate culture based on an integration of financial decisions with decisions of a more social and environmental nature using the "triple bottom line" approach.
For this reason, the description of sustainability performance is included in the Group's Annual Report, rather than being published separately.

As the Group Chairman has said, "The decision to include a section on sustainability within the financial statements is an indication of the high priority of this topic and, at the same time, should encourage us to operate in a way that will satisfy all the stakeholders, based on healthy, lasting growth."

The content of the Sustainability Report focuses on the issues of greatest interest to the Group's stakeholders, highlighting and explaining 2007 trends as compared with what was reported in prior years.

The scope of the annual sustainability report is the same as that of the Group's consolidated financial statements in terms of the companies it comprises. Any affiliates not included in a given performance indicator or other data point are specified in the notes.

Preparation of the report follows the Sustainability Reporting Guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI-G3).
Analysis of sustainable performance is based on a set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) developed on the basis of GRI (updated G3) indicators, the Global Compact principles, and on what is periodically monitored by the main rating agencies.  For the financial and social dimensions, the reporting principles prepared by the Group for its Social Report are also used. The Sustainability Report includes Summary Tables, which are designed to help readers to compare the issues discussed in the report with the international experience of the GRI and the Global Compact.

Data collection for the report is done using the CSR Data Management (CSR-DM) system developed by Pirelli. This system is one of the applications that has come out of the Pirelli Group's CSR operating procedures, which formalize the full integration of CSR within the Group's reporting structure. "The CSR planning and control cycle follows the Group's reporting and planning calendar and methodologies."
